In the fall of 2002, a young pup named Mac entered the world of hunting trials by storm. His legs had not yet grown into his huge feet, and his head had not yet caught up with his hound-like ears. While his owner was personable and would talk to anyone, it was apparent that Mac was a one-man dog and that man was Walt Chapman. This was not Walt’s first dog. Walt had years of trial experience under his belt ranging anywhere from horseback trials to walking events. Walt was running 2 dogs, the young Mac and his go-to dog at the time, Leon. As all young dogs do, Mac was prone to make a mistakes, here and there. You would hear Walt say, “he is not Leon”, and as time went on, it became apparent that Walt was absolutely correct. He was not Leon, he was Mac and would soon make a name for himself.
Mac was a dog that covered the field more like an all-age dog rather than the puppy that he was. If there were birds to be found, Mac would find them. It did not matter how hot or cold it was or how bad the conditions were. Mac did his job each and every time he was in a field. Over time, if Walt and Mac were at an event, competitors knew they had their work was cut out for them. In many cases they set the bar for what it would take to win the event. The understanding between Mac and Walt was clear. They both had a job to do and Mac did his part very well. Mac would find his birds time and time again and every retrieve was made no matter how long or how short it was. That consistency put them at the top of their game over and over again. No matter the size of the trial, everyone wanted to watch the old man and his dog compete.
Over the course of the next 10 years this duo continued their winning ways until Walt retired Mac in 2010. They went out in normal fashion with Mac and Walt winning the Master Pointing division at the BDC National Championships with the last run of the day.
Mac is the current 4th ranked high point pointing dog in BDC history with 830 lifetime points.
He is a dog among dogs, he is Mac, a dog that will be remembered forever.
