All dog owners have said or heard of the saying “Once in a lifetime dog”. McCarthy’s Luck O’ the Irish Ryley came into the lives of Jerry and Brenda McCarthy on Oct 10, 2009 as the Pick of her litter and truly was the Dog of a Lifetime. Breeder Paul Swift of Swift Creek Labs ended up bottle feeding her entire litter because of complications her Mother had. She was a fighter from the very beginning. Ryley ran her first BDC event at the 2010 Trigger Time Declared Major Tournament in Sept 2010 taking 2nd Place in the Puppy Flushing, running in different categories with 4 different people to help make her on of those dogs that would go to the line with anybody that had a gun and vest. She actually didn’t need the gun much as she was a very accomplished “Trapper” and had a nose that didn’t often miss even a small whiff of bird. She excelled in poor conditions. This well rounded special girl was very vocal walking to the line, everybody within earshot heard how excited Ryley was. The next month she ran in the BDC Worlds competition making the finals where she placed 5th at the young age of 1 year old and finishing the year as the Region 1 High Point Puppy Flusher.
2011 would be a big year for Ryley, she started at he first Nationals in March of 2011 where she made the runoff in 4 different categories Top Gun, Doubles, Masters and Puppy Flushing bringing home a runner-up finish in Doubles with Jerry and long time partner Max Wroten. She would finish the year as the BDC Region 1 High Point Doubles Flusher and National BDC Puppy Flusher of the Year. At Nationals in March 2012 she would lead Brenda to a National Championships in a hotly contested Ladies Flusher event. The Classic Super Major in September saw Ryley take a 1st Place with Brenda in Amateur Flushing and 1st Place in Master Flushing.
Oct 2012 Worlds saw Ryley lead Brenda to another big win in Bracket play to win a World Championship.
Ryley took a 5 year break in BDC competition having reached Legendary Status before her 3rd birthday. During this break from the BDC she would win titles and Championships in 3 other organizations.
20018 brought a return to the BDC family where she continued her winning ways. In 2020 Brenda and Jerry decided this would be Ryley’s last year of competition, her joints were starting to be very painful. Running in her last Midwest Gundog Series event she led Jerry to an emotional 1st Place finish on her 11th Birthday. Ryley finished out her career at the Running W Ranch in Lovelock, NV BDC Western Nationals where she tore he Right ACL while leading Brenda to a 2nd place finish in Lady Flusher.
Ryley was a wonderful companion who loved to travel, having competed in competitions on 10 different states and never missing an opportunity to occupy her spot any time or place “Her” truck went. She was very easy Going and a joy to be around.
Today, March 10, 2022 Ryley enters the BDC Hall od Fame as a Legendary Status Dog with 34 Championships, 693 career Champion point, 3 Super Major Championships and 5 Major Championships. Ryley is adored by Jerry and Brenda and her 2 legged Sisters. Allie and Bailey.
