Jack was the first bird dog puppy I got to pick for myself. I had always bought trained bird dogs before him. I picked him because of the unique marking he had on his left eye which earned him his name Bing’s One Eyed Jack. As always when it came time for training he was off to Epp’s Kennels. He had just finished his training when chukar season opened and it was one of the best hatches Nevada has ever seen. So when he got home it was off to the mountains to chase wild birds. In the first month of the season he had over 100 birds harvested over him. On one of those hunting trips he had screwed up so I called my trainer to tell him about it. He told me to just bring him back as he will never be worth a dam! My response to that was “ I will give you my wife before I would give you that dog!”. Jack was a beast on the mountain. Jack would travel 30 to 32 miles in 4 to 5 hours on the mountain and that was tracked with a Garmin GPS. Sometimes he would be clear across on the other side of the canyon when he would go on point. My hunting partner Johnny would look at me and say he’s your dog so off I would go all the way over to the other side sometimes taking 15 to 20 minutes but Jack would never move and when I got there the birds would be there too.
That spring it was off to try his luck at some tournaments The Nevada Series. Jack was a speedster in the field just like on the mountain. I never knew how he could ever smell a bird going that fast but his bird finding ability always proved that wrong. Even after he had scent he didn’t slow down until he slammed a point about 5 steps from the bird. That year he won High Point Dog for the Year for The Nevada Series at one year old. The next year Bing got involved with the BDC when Nevada started to sanction their shoots. The first one was a Major where he won Top Gun and the next one was a Super Major Western Nationals where he won Top Gun and second in the doubles. Two years later Bing had decided to get serious about playing and traveling and Jack won 2010 Dog of the Year. Jack added Super Major wins at the Big Meadows, the Classic, the Invitational and finally in 2015 The Nationals. Jack continued to be competitive winning 3rd at Western Nationals in 2017 beating 91 other dogs when he was almost twelve years old. Jack ran his last run the next year at Western Nationals two weeks before he turned 13.
Jack had many accomplishments and wins but more than that he has been Bing’s constant companion. He has gone everywhere with Bing since he came home with him at 6 weeks old. He has spend many hours riding in a pickup, a cattle truck or a tractor. Now he is fourteen years old and still goes with Bing all the time.
Today, March 12,2020, Jack enters the BDC Hall of Fame as a Legendary Status Dog with 74 Championships, 1478 career Champion Points, 8 Super Major wins and 10 Major wins. Jack completed his career in 2018 ranked 3rd overall in Pointing Dog Lifetime achievement: a pillar of success of Bing’s dogs who will never be forgotten by the many who know and love him.
