Shrek was born into the Oberle family not long after the Dreamworks movie, Shrek, was a hit. He had a liver patch on his side, and to a 3-year-old Oberle child, looked exactly like the ogre, Shrek. Our legend got his name!
Brad Jentzsch, aka Cub, spent his entire life with Labs. Breeding labs, duck hunting with labs, and upland hunting with labs. When Shrek was a puppy, he was repeatedly placed in Cub’s lap, but Shrek was the wrong kind of dog. It wasn’t until Cub’s daughter, Breanna, finally met Shrek and said, “Daddy, I want this puppy”. Cub couldn’t refuse his little girl and gave in, now becoming a German Shorthair guy, and Shrek got his permanent family, the Jentzsch’s.
When the Steinbach family took him in for training, Shrek became a member of a 3rd family. Shrek, a gentle giant, thought he dominated the exercise pen. Because of this, Teri Steinbach gave him the nickname, Side of Beef. One of his other nicknames was The Bail Out King, because Shrek once mastered the 100-yard retrieve bailing Cub out! The comment “It’s a bird in the bag, Stein!” became part of many doubles runs between Cub and Steiny.
As a tournament hunter, Shrek’s accomplishments are among some of the best. Shrek got his start in the WI series where he competed for many Dog of the Year titles. He also placed in various NATHA events during his career. In the BDC, Shrek competed against many legends such as Albert, Reggie, Dusty, and Gauge; this is where he placed his biggest mark on tournament hunting. Shrek’s first Super Major win was as a puppy at the 2006 Nationals. Shrek concluded his tournament career by again winning Nationals in 2013. This placed him 2nd behind teammate Madelyn for Lifetime Pointer standings; Shrek is currently ranked 4th.
Shrek knew the difference between a tournament and being out for a Thursday afternoon stroll. It didn’t matter the type of hunt, he seemed to know how to cover the field; you didn’t need strategy and planning, Shrek just knew where to find the birds.
Although Shrek is most known for his role in tournament hunting, he also spent his glory years guiding for people of all ages. He played a large role in an annual youth pheasant hunting event, and guided numerous family and corporate outings while in his prime. Many have had the honor of hunting with Shrek and will forever have the memories of being in the field with him.
On this day, March 15, 2018, Shrek enters the BDC Hall of Fame with 1429 Champion Points, 7 Super Major wins, 12 Major wins, a 72x and Legendary Champion who will never be forgotten.
